Understanding Foundation Repair

What Causes foundation Damage?

Foundation damage can occur due to a variety of reasons:

Soil-Related Issues: Soil expansion, soil shrinkage, and poor soil compaction can all lead to foundation damage.  Clay soil expand or contract with changes in moisture levels, and these changes can apply pressure to the foundation, causing it to crack or shift.

Water Damage: Excessive water due to poor drainage, plumbing leaks, or flooding can weaken the foundation. More often, water sitting next to foundation will cause soils to expand lifting areas of the building. On the other hand, not enough water can lead to the soil shrinking away from the foundation causing a loss of support.

Tree Roots: Large tree roots can grow into the foundation, causing cracks or structural issues.

Poor Construction: If the foundation was not correctly built in the first place, problems are more likely to arise later on.

Natural Disasters: Earthquakes, landslides, or extreme weather conditions can also damage foundations.

Signs of foundation damage may include visible cracks in the foundation itself, cracks in walls or ceilings, doors or windows that stick or won't close properly, floors that are uneven or sagging, and gaps around window frames or doors.

If you notice any signs of foundation damage, it's important to get a professional evaluation as soon as possible. Ignoring the problem can lead to more severe and costly repairs down the line,  and in extreme cases, can even make the building unsafe to occupy.
